boys and girls but say we're doing lesson 15 - 5K we're dividing rectangles into equal Square now I sent to your PDF of math tool that you can print out and use to help you with you help me with this that this PDF has these squares that you can cut out and use on your sheet to help you with that okay I'm going to just draw them the best I can because I can't show you them on my iPad all right but you have them at home to help you if you need them right to it says how many equal squares cover this rectangle how can you show that with an addition equation LIC 1 2 3 4 5 and I see there are 1 2 3 4 rows of 5 squares paying so I can do 5 or * 5 + 5 what's 5 + 5 equals and when you add that up 5 10 15 20 is 20 squares okay or if you really wanted to you could just count them right but we know that repeated addition is a much faster way to do this okay we've. We did this at the beginning of the school year and you now it's going to come back and you're going to use those tools we use in the beginning alright so it says here how many red squares can cover this rectangle so you want to draw them like this you don't just want to place them how you want to make them in rows and columns remember Rose I left and right columns are up and down do you count each row has four squares okay and then you can add the squares by The Rose I have 1 2 3 row so the 4 3 2 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 + 4 + 4 equals 12 you could do it by columns right we have one two three four columns with one two three Square so 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 equals all right that's how you can add how many equal squares cover the shape the number one says use the square tiles to cover this rectangle trace the child column one is done for you so if you have yours you can start laying them out when I'm going to do is I'm just going to can you the wine hang out like that and then based on the size of the square I'm going to just kind of make my drawing as best I can K9 you're going to have six columns in this grid okay that's how it's going to work the 1 2 3 4 5 6 all right do I have 3 rows and six alright the one two three one two three four five six so now you can use your repeated addition to help you do this account and add how many squares cover the rectangle add by roads so if I three rows of six I'm going to do the Pick 3 * 6 + 6 + 6 equal 18K if I add by columns and I have six and I have 1 2 3 and eat so 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 3 Philly 12:18 so no matter which way you do it I'm always going to have 18 equal Square all right so this is the important part here is how you arrange them hey I'm just throw them down into the rectangle and hope for the best all right you got to do it little by little all right and in rows and columns all right next page or going to take those sheets and you're going to put them here all right so here you can see by how many rows are going to have based on how many lines you have you're going to end up having four roads all right one 2 three four I know they're not perfect when I drop them but you where is you have the squares to help you okay and you're going to have five columns one two three four and then you'll have five okay if I have 1 2 3 4 5 in each right so that would be 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 9 equals 20 right here I have one two three four so I have four what's 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 not also equals 20 hint hint you guys just did multiplication without even realizing it can you have five four times so five times four equals 20 you have four five times or in five columns right though 4 * 5 equals 20 same thing okay we're going to do roads here are number 4 and 1/2 3 for all right we're also going to have four columns k 5 1 2 3 4 by 4 in each row which equals and then I have four in each column all right so again for + 4 + 4 + 4 also equal 16 so both of these equations 4 * 4 number 5 draw a rectangle that is divided into 6 equal squares 6 equal squares so a rectangle could be anything like this so what I would do I would do it like this right rectangle is 1 2 3 4 5 6 one two three four five six right another option. Last page all right this is what per pattern Lisa bake cornbread she cuts it into equal Square pieces how many equals Square pieces do you see write the two equations to show the total number of square pieces were interested by the roads icy in one two three four in each row and there are one two three four five six rows when was going to be for 6 * 4 + 4 + 4 + 444 + 4 K has 24 pieces when you add it all up in columns I see 1 2 3 4 5 6 2 IC 6 4 x 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 again 24 + 24 pieces ever way you count it label the columns and the rows for the large Square below these here are rose and the ones when they go left and right and here are the columns a up and down all right look at the large Square in item 7 all right look at the large we're an item 7 what do you notice about the number of roads in the number of column so I see one two three and one two three they are the right that's it that's the same number of rows and same number, so be 3 x 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 only one that paid one equation equals the number of squares in that in that 10 and 9 Cal that equal squares in the Rose and The Columns of the rectangle then use the numbers on the card to write the missing numbers in the equation y c 12 Rose and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 then use the numbers in the cards to write so Road I think two rows of 7 + 7 + 7 14 right then we have columns where I have 7 rows of 2 that's basically like counting by twos oh 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 Ryan that's how you use your equal Square
