all right boys and girls so we're going to start our new topic topic 12 you should have already read through the vocabulary cards okay and you didn't look at all the ability cards and bring the word back and leave the definition before you start this guy so make sure you've done that before you start this so you're familiar with the the words praying so the first one is estimating might remember estimating means guessing make a good guess based on what you know K and length is how long something is because you're done is about 1 inch long use your thumb to find three objects that are about 1 inch long and draw the app Kite from your elbow to your fingers is about 1 foot long can use this part of your arm to find three objects that are each one foot long and draw the object I'm just going to write the word because we know that I'm not the best artist okay so I would say a paperclip is about 1 inch maybe my Eraser is about 1 in okay and maybe the little pins that go on the bulletin board you know the the push pins are about 1 inch to K1 what I would say my laptop maybe that one footlong okay my book my textbook are you reading a book can I have books like yours and then maybe my iPad I'm thinking about things that might be one footlong so they've got the length from my elbow to my fingers so look around your house look around your room see what might be one inch or 1 foot remember one inch is the your thumb one foot is from the top of your finger to your elbow kind remember my arm is longer than yours so this is for your arm all right then turn your Peach pain at the top it says you can use the length of objects to estimate the length of other object but this some small paper clips are about 1 inch like I was thinking before right use a small paperclip to estimate how long eraser is the Eraser is about to paper clips long so it's probably about 2 inches long okay same thing you can ask me with objects that are 1 foot or one yard one yard equals 3 feet day or 3 with ruler length write the name and length of an object whose length you know then use that object to help you who made the length of the object shown so we said we know that one paper clip is 1 inch long write my pencil your your pencil might be about how long think about the pencil you're using to write right now I would say about I'm going to save up 7 in you're using a really long pencil you're using a short pencil might be a little shorter Misty I love you in Romanian so I was seven inches on your pencil maybe three in one year using and I hear you have your desk but my book is about 1 foot long or one ruler length right so my dad might be about what now it's cool we all have the same desolate to measure but it home your desk might be longer than somebody else is or shorter than somebody else's case I'm going to think with our desks at school so I think of our Jessica school I think it's about to feed you can probably put two rulers together and get the length of your desk okay it says is your height closer to four feet or four yards + think about that 4 yards would be 3 4 * would be 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 366 + 399 + 3/12 + 12 feet K in 4 yards so do you think you're closer to 4:50 or 12 ft for 4 yards I think you guys are closer to 4 p.m. closer to 4 then then I am to 12 feet right trophies like the size of the room from the floor to the ceiling just keep that in mind when you think about it one yard if 3 ft next page can you guys hear the cats running around write the name and length of an object whose length you do know then use that I need to help you estimate the length of the object shown so it says my object whose length I know so I could say my is 1 inch long right after we were talking about before so my hand is about so the gas is about how many inches so I use mine I would probably stay my hand is about 6 in you can look at your hand and you can think about what yours might be at your hand is smaller than mine remember that of my hands about six or seven inches yours probably three or four maybe five or ain't try it out and see what you got and remember you're not just copying what I'm writing cuz I'm writing based on my hand. You should be writing based on your hand and it says my Frank is blank long so we know that my book right is 1 foot long so if you have your green textbook or another book that might be a footlong you can use that to measure and they're going to measure your chair now I'm sitting in a high chair cuz my kitchen table is high so think about the chair you're sitting in okay I will call my floor is about 3 feet high okay if I put three books on top of each other I think I'd get to about the height of my chair use it to do your chair that you're sitting in your chair might be smaller or might even be bigger than mine depending upon where you are in your house right now what's the higher order thinking would you ask to meet the distance from your classroom to the principal's office in inches feet or yard so think about that if we're thinking about how long it takes to get from our classroom and school the missus Colfax is office in in the in the main office right do you think we should use inches feet or yard right we have one in one foot or one yard which one is the biggest one do you guys think the biggest unit of measurement which covers the longest distance the yard right that's the reef eat okay so take to get a longer distance you probably want to use the measurement tool that gives you the most length in one shot okay so if I were to take a yardstick and go from our classroom the Miz's caucuses office I probably would use a yardstick to do that right not an inch ruler cuz that would be a lot of inches and not as many yard so I would say I would use yards because it covers more lynx at one time okay so it's easier to measure a long distance with some sort of cool that takes up a big length right if we did Inch by Inch by Inch from our classroom to mrs. Copa that would be a really long time review very large number cancel anything about that once we go through these lessons k which unit of metric measurement that means inch yard feet okay is either bigger or smaller than another so which one would you use to measure certain object k a long-distance you might want to use something but if I'm only measuring a small ear Easter or a pencil maybe inches is better right to keep thinking about that as we go through and let's keep going so you have vocabulary says complete the sentence using one of the words below a blank measurement is a good guess so an exact estimated 4 inch I think we've learned the estimate of the good death number 7 joy and Kyle estimate the height of their classrooms that means the height is from the floor to the ceiling joist estimates the height to be 10 feet Kyle estimate the height to be any yard who has the better estimate explain will 10 yards right equals 310 times the 3 ten times is 30 queso do you think our classroom is closer to 10 feet tall or 30 feet tall I would say 10 ft right if we stacked 10 rollers on top of each other probably would get closer to the feeling can a 30 feet I think is just a little too big so I say I think you ain't is correct because yards equals 30 feet and that's too many are too big right I think there is a little too big outside of the school building K8 still a city wants to build a bridge over a river should they plan out an exact length of the bridge or estimated length is an estimated length good oh I don't know what do you think if you got to get from one side of a river to another and it do you think saying about 30 feet is good or do you think I need to know exactly 30 feet at what they need to know exactly right why do you think it needs to be to know exact well I think because if you're short right say you say it's 30 ft but it's actually 32 what's going to happen to those cars that are driving over the bridge they're going to fall off right because not that floppy racing start over do we need an exact laying then people will fall off right then cars or people so if it was 2 short right if your if your bridge is too short and doesn't make it when you're not going to make it to the other side so 9 assessment draw a line from each estimate estimate to a matching object so about one in one foot or 3ft which is one you're right I would say the notebook probably bigger than an inch right not quite three feet so I'm going to stay one foot fan that you put on a letter I would say one in regular small cuz they go in the corner and that leaves the umbrella that's a big umbrella right some umbrellas are bigger than others so that's our first part of measurement hey activating guessing based on the size of other thing right there
