Religion Grade 8 (Period 8-2) Assignments

Instructor
Mr. Mark Radzin
Term
17/18 School Year
Description
Welcome to Grade 8 Religion!

This year we will be primarily studying the growth and history of the Catholic Church, starting with its foundation by Christ leading up to the present. Along the way we will explore the rich history and symbolism of Church architecture (and the students will form teams to design their own church buildings), we will delve deeper into the Mass, the "source and summit" of the Catholic faith, and we will examine important real-world social and ethical issues through the lens of Catholic moral teaching.

All homework assignments and test preparation materials will be posted to this site. Looking forward to a great year!

Mass Packet Quiz on Wednesday!

See quizlet here: https://quizlet.com/_33jly7

There will be a short answer question-- here it is:

Think back to the videos we watched, and remember one thing that the speakers said that stuck with you or made you think differently about the Mass, your relationship with God or the Church, or your place in the world. Do the following:
• Briefly restate what was said (and who said it, if you remember)
• What do you think they mean in saying this? If there is more than one meaning or a deeper meaning, please describe.
• Explain how what they said has changed the way you see things or think.

Looking back through your discussion questions for sessions 1-4 should help with this.

Assignment

Extra Credit: Attend and report on an extra-curricular Church event.
  • Attend a Church based event different from anything you've done before-- either one that I post on the bulletin board and/or Website, or one you find on your own (must be approved by me ahead of time!).
  • This could be:
    • a concert of sacred music
    • a special prayer service
    • A youth group meeting (if you've never been to one)
    • Eucharistic Adoration
    • A Latin Mass
    • Another foreign language Mass (especially a language you speak or study)
    • An Eastern Orthodox Mass (there are several Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches in the area, and the Eucharist offered at them is considered valid and fulfills our Sunday obligation for Mass)
  • Write a report on your experience. The report should include:
    • The name, date, time, and location of the event you attended
    • A detailed description of what you saw, heard, etc.
    • Your impressions: What you liked, disliked, what confused you, what enlightened you , inspired you, or got you thinking, and how
  • The reflection should be AT LEAST a full page double spaced, but for a strong grade I would like to see as much detail as possible, so you should expect to write more
  • One event per quarter
  • Do not attend and report on the same type of event (or something very similar) twice!!!

UPDATE:
I am extending the deadline to Monday night-- so if your email with the project gets to me on Monday, January 22, your project is submitted on time, in cluding after school. This gives you Monday evening to work on it, which I'm sure many of you will welcome. I can't push it back any further than that and still have time to properly grade them.

Also-- video link in the attached email has been corrected. Links are also pasted into this description below:
• Acts ("Courage") from “The Bible” Miniseries”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--guYTHO-eQ&t=1798s
• “Mankind”: The Spread of Christianity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayPwk7tCnHs
• Crusade Myths Debunked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubhIXY2WExk

If you choose to use your articles on the Inquisition or Crusades, and don't have a copy, they are both posted on Edlio from the time they were assigned.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your weekend.

Assignment

NOT AN ASSIGNMENT...

but some extra credit opportunities!

If you're looking for something to do for the Church event extra credit to bump up your grade, here are a few options that will get you to something interesting before the end of the quarter. Remember, you need to write up a detailed account of what you saw, heard, etc., and a thorough discussion of your thoughts and impressions-- and it needs to be something different than you've ever done before!

Friday, January 19, 7:30 PM
Latin Mass
St. Mary's
178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich CT 06830
If you've never been to a Latin Mass, you owe it to yourself to go! Experience the Liturgy as it was celebrated for centuries!

Sunday, January 21, 9:00 AM
Greek Orthodox Orthros and Liturgy
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church
1230 Newfield Avenue Stamford, CT 06905
Celebrate morning prayer and Mass with our Orthodox brothers and sisters! The Eastern and Western Churches split in 1054, but we recognize each other's Eucharist and attending will be a valid fulfillment of your Sunday obligation-- and a VERY different experience from your typical Catholic Mass!

Will add more if I find more-- and let me know if your parish is doing something special!

If you haven't already completed the Church Analysis Worksheet given out this week, please take a few minutes and have a look at your church building (or any church building you might have access to... doesn't have to be Catholic, and there are plenty that you can get inside!) over the weekend (both the Holy Day tomorrow and Sunday Mass are two great opportunities) through the eyes of an architect. This handy sheet will help! Worksheet is due Monday.

Also included is the guide to styles in case you misplace it, or if you want to print it in vivid color.

WANT EXTRA CREDIT? Here is an opportunity....

Write a (minimum) 5 paragraph essay that discusses the following:
o Read the following article:

Write about similarities and differences between the Christian martyrs in the Middle East today

Present your own thoughts on the content of the article, and the chapters in our book (and/or films we watched) that dealt with early Christian martyrs

You may organize the paper as you wish, but here is an example of how you might structure it:

Paragraph 1:
o Introduce the topic
o Briefly explain what we learned in class about martyrs in the early Church
o Briefly summarize some of the major points in the article

Paragraph 2:
o Explain some similarities between martyrs in the early Church and martyrs in the middle east today (you should be able to come up with at least 3-4, if not more.
o Give as much detail as you can!

Paragraph 3:
o Explain some differences between martyrs in the early Church and martyrs in the middle east today (you should be able to come up with at least 3-4.
o Give as much detail as you can!

Paragraph 4:
o Here you can get a little more personal. What struck you the most in the article? In our class?
o How can you use the example of these martyrs to help yourself become a better person.
o Being honest and thinking deeply about this topic and where you might need help becoming better will help make this section strong

Paragraph 5:
o Summarize and tie together the three body paragraphs
o Finish with a strong concluding sentence.

Papers will be worth a total of up to 20 points of extra credit.
Papers must be typewritten and submitted according to school LA standards. Hard copy only, no electronic submissions!

DEADLINE EXTENDED!!!

Extra Credit Anyone? Here is the "little" extra credit opportunity... you can do this AND the 5-paragraph essay which will be posted separately:

Extra Credit: Attend and report on an extra-curricular Church event.
Attend a Church based event-- either one that I post on the bulletin board and/or Website, or one you find on your own (must be approved by me ahead of time!). This could be a concert of sacred music, a special prayer service, Eucharistic Adoration, a special Mass, etc. If I didn't post it, run it by me. Also, it should be something you do NOW, not something you did earlier. I want you to go into it trying to engage it in a way that you can report back on it, and I want your impressions to be fresh.

Write a report on your experience. The report should include:
The name, date, time, and location of the event you attended
A detailed description of what you saw, heard, etc.
Your impressions: What you liked, disliked, what confused you, what enlightened you , inspired you, or got you thinking, and how
The reflection should be AT LEAST a full page double spaced, but for a strong grade I would like to see as much detail as possible, so you should expect to write more
One event per quarter

Worth up to ten extra quiz/test points (for maximum points, it better be great!).

You may not attend and report on the same type of event twice (same school year AND year to year!!!)

Assignment

Don’t like your grade on the Chapter 12 Quiz? Want half credit for your wrong answers?
Do the following, and EXACTLY the following:

1) Take a piece of loose leaf paper (as I said in class, you may type this and print it out instead).

2) Write your name and the title “Quiz Corrections Religion Chapter 12” at the top.

3) In complete sentences, write out the entirety of each wrong answer as it should read, including the question number before the sentence.

So correcting a multiple choice would read like this… if the question were:

3. The 8th Grade ELA teacher
a. Mr. Radzin b. Mrs. Ohls c. Mr. Carretta d. Mrs. Lutz

You would write: “3. The 8th Grade ELA teacher is Mrs. Ohls.”

For correcting the matching section, use the form, “The heresy of __[name from 1st column]_____ taught the false belief that __[definition from second column]______________.”

Fill in the blanks is easy. Just rewrite the entire sentence with all of the correct answers if it has multiple blanks—even the ones you already got right.

For true and false, write out the entire sentence as it is if it should be true, or correct it to be true if it should be false.

4) Staple the paper with the corrections to your quiz sheet and return them to me in class tomorrow. I will not ask for them, you will need to give it to me on your own initiative. If you don’t hand me back corrections by class time tomorrow, I will take that to mean that you are comfortable with your score. There will be no extensions on this.

5) For those who earned bonus points in the Nicene Creed game, you may use those bonus points (already reflected in your grade) OR take advantage of this offer, not both. Choose whichever will do you the most good.

3. Docetism
4. Gnosticism
5. Modalism
6. Monophysitism
7. Nestorianism (also in the book)

Assignment

Don't forget to bring materials to help decorate your prayer journals tomorrow.

I have some materials in class-- mostly construction paper, Mod Podge glue, and last year's textbooks that have some nice religious images that you can cut out.

Some things you might use:
  • Self-sticking decorative paper
  • Lettering stickers
  • Family photos
  • Images relating to an interest, sport, or hobby that brings you closer to God
This journal is where you will write about God, yourself, and your relationship with each other, so please keep anything you use appropriate to that purpose. Some things to avoid:
  • Images of celebrities
  • Images from pop culture that might not glorify God (video games, etc.)
We will only be working on this on class time tomorrow, but if you don't finish you are of course free to stop by during lunch/recess any day I am around to work on it, or bring it home and work on it there.

For those who did not complete the class work (BLM 43A/B, Acts of the Apostles Bible Search) during the class period, just finish it up for Monday morning.

If you don't have a Bible, you can use www.biblegateway.com (see previous assignment).

Assignment

Homework! Woohoo! OK, this should not take you long:

Please complete the exercise in your textbook on p. 96. You will read Acts 6:8-15 and 7:51-60, then answer the questions as a witness who is being questioned by reporters.

If you don't have a Bible handy at home (and you should!), don't worry-- you can go to an online Bible to complete this assignment. I've found the best one to be www.biblegateway.com.  When you use it, make sure to go to the dropdown next to the search box and set your translation as New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE). This version is the best in terms of being easy to read while still staying true to the original language-- this is the one we use in class, and is approved by the Catholic Church.

Once you set the translation, you can enter what you want to read into the search box-- just type "Acts 6:8-25" and it will bring that up.

I will check work and we will discuss tomorrow.

Thanks!
