8th Grade Religion EXTRA CREDIT Essay

 

An additional opportunity for extra credit: An exploration of Biblical themes in Elie Wiesel's Night. Please see the attached document. This will be worth more than the reflection-- maximum is 20 points, but it would need to be exceptional to earn that-- remember that all points are BONUS points, so this can go a long way to boosting your grade.

 

Also, anyone who did not do the 8th Grade 5-paragraph essays for Q1, Q2, or Q3, could use one of those writing prompts INSTEAD OF (NOT in addition to) this one-- but only if you did not do that particular prompt earlier.

Just take a few minutes and have a look at your church building over the weekend through the eyes of an architect. This handy sheet will help!

We will review IF we have school tomorrow. Otherwise, here is a link to a quizlet-- https://quizlet.com/_33jly7 (password is ALTARATION all caps as written) if you know everything on this, you should do fine! There will be fill-in-the-blanks, but a word bank will be provided, so don't go crazy worrying about spellings (especially "transubstantiation").

 

There will also be a short writing prompt on the quiz, asking you to remember three things the speakers said in the videos that stuck with you and changed the way you look at Mass, the Church, your role in the world, the priesthood, etc. You will be asked to remember what they said, explain what you think they meant or go into any deeper meanings, and explain how what they said has changed your thoughts or beliefs. 

Read through the packet that was handed out today, we will have a reading check (mini-quiz) tomorrow. Expect five questions, multiple choice or matching. Nothing super-detailed, just a check that you actually read the packet.

Extra! Extra! Added the questions from our in-class review today ("8 Study Questions 8"). If you can answer these all, you should do fine.

Study guide for Chapter 7. We will be going over all of this in class on Monday. Anyone who won't be around next week, no worries, we will schedule the quiz for the other side of Thanksgiving break. Enjoy the long(-ish) weekend!

Write a reflection (one page double spaced, more if you need it) about the field trip to St. Augustine Cathedral and the Thomas Merton Center in Bridgeport. Some questions you could ask yourself:

Really just your thoughts on our day and what you got out of it.

 

For those students who could not join us on the field trip, please write a similar one-page reflection on how prayer and/or sacred spaces (churches, shrines, etc.) can help us follow the first part of the Great Commandment, and how service to others helps us live the second part. Talk about times in your life you have felt closer to God through prayer and/or sacred spaces, and when you have encountered Christ in being there for others, or talk about ways you can use prayer and service to grow spiritually.

Just a reminder for everyone to bring in permission slips and $9.00 for the field trip tomorrow!

Quickly fill out the answers to the questions on page 76 to the best of your ability (this is not a quiz, just a way to see what you know going in to this unit). The substitute teacher WILL be checking these, so take a few minutes from this gorgeous day to do it! Five minutes tops!

Morality Unit Quiz

The review of the film "God's Not Dead" will be due on Thursday, September 29, and will count as a quiz grade. While we won't finish the film until Monday, students should start to gather their thoughts as we progress through the movie.

 

If anyone wants feedback on rough drafts, please let me know and I will have a look at them, The assignment, rubric, and discussion questions are attached.

I've been very pleased with the engagement and energy in our classes, so thanks to all the students for your hard work!

 

Please see the attached study guide-- I will hand out hard copies and go through it tomorrow, so if you have questions or need clarifications, we will have that chance.

 

With the challenges of the construction I know it's been tough for everyone with their binders, etc., so I have attached our class handouts here as well in case anyone lost their hard copies.

Great discussion today, I was so happy that everyone was engaged and had interesting perspectives to offer. So that we can hit the ground running tomorrow, consider the following questions, and write a few thoughts down about each so that we can discuss tomorrow. This shouldn't take more than a few minutes, so make sure you enjoy this warn weather!
