Extra Credit: Attend and report on an extra-curricular Church event.
- Attend a Church based event-- either one that I post on the bulletin board and/or Website, or one you find on your own (must be approved by me ahead of time!). This could be a concert of sacred music, a special prayer service, Eucharistic Adoration, a special Mass, etc.
- Write a report on your experience. The report should include:
- The name, date, time, and location of the event you attended
- A detailed description of what you saw, heard, etc.
- Your impressions: What you liked, disliked, what confused you, what enlightened you , inspired you, or got you thinking, and how
- The reflection should be AT LEAST a full page double spaced, but for a strong grade I would like to see as much detail as possible, so you should expect to write more
- One event per quarter
- You may not attend and report on the same type of event twice (same school year AND year to year!!!

8th Grade Religion EXTRA CREDIT Essay
An additional opportunity for extra credit: An exploration of Biblical themes in Elie Wiesel's Night. Please see the attached document. This will be worth more than the reflection-- maximum is 20 points, but it would need to be exceptional to earn that-- remember that all points are BONUS points, so this can go a long way to boosting your grade.
Also, anyone who did not do the 8th Grade 5-paragraph essays for Q1, Q2, or Q3, could use one of those writing prompts INSTEAD OF (NOT in addition to) this one-- but only if you did not do that particular prompt earlier.

- 20 Fill in the blanks (with word bank, some words will not be used)
- 20 matching questions (split into three sets)
- 15 True and false

We will discuss in class on Friday! Happy Ascension Thursday!

Quiz for Chapter 15: "The Church Faces Challenges" packet.
- There is NO short answer section-- just the objective questions.
- The best prep for this is to study (in conjunction with your packet) the following kahoot:
- The first ten questions are pretty much exactly taken from the quiz
- Questions 11-16 contain all the content for the rest of the quiz-- if you know both which answers are right and which are wrong, you should do great.

Quiz on the "Altaration" video/handout on Friday.
We will review IF we have school tomorrow. Otherwise, here is a link to a quizlet-- https://quizlet.com/_33jly7 (password is ALTARATION all caps as written) if you know everything on this, you should do fine! There will be fill-in-the-blanks, but a word bank will be provided, so don't go crazy worrying about spellings (especially "transubstantiation").
There will also be a short writing prompt on the quiz, asking you to remember three things the speakers said in the videos that stuck with you and changed the way you look at Mass, the Church, your role in the world, the priesthood, etc. You will be asked to remember what they said, explain what you think they meant or go into any deeper meanings, and explain how what they said has changed your thoughts or beliefs.

Assignment
Write a reflection (one page double spaced, more if you need it) about the field trip to St. Augustine Cathedral and the Thomas Merton Center in Bridgeport. Some questions you could ask yourself:
- What impressed you the most on the trip?
- What were your impressions of the Cathedral, the holy door, or the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy?
- What were your impressions of the Merton Center? The building itself? The staff? The people who it serves?
- Were you surprised by anything at the Cathedral or the Merton Center
- Was there anything that you didn't like or that confused you?
- How did these two places together reflect the Great Commandment?
Really just your thoughts on our day and what you got out of it.
For those students who could not join us on the field trip, please write a similar one-page reflection on how prayer and/or sacred spaces (churches, shrines, etc.) can help us follow the first part of the Great Commandment, and how service to others helps us live the second part. Talk about times in your life you have felt closer to God through prayer and/or sacred spaces, and when you have encountered Christ in being there for others, or talk about ways you can use prayer and service to grow spiritually.

Just a reminder for everyone to bring in permission slips and $9.00 for the field trip tomorrow!

Thanks in advance for your hard work tomorrow and Friday, and see you all on Monday!

We will have our first quiz this Friday!
I've been very pleased with the engagement and energy in our classes, so thanks to all the students for your hard work!
Please see the attached study guide-- I will hand out hard copies and go through it tomorrow, so if you have questions or need clarifications, we will have that chance.
With the challenges of the construction I know it's been tough for everyone with their binders, etc., so I have attached our class handouts here as well in case anyone lost their hard copies.
Have a great evening!

Just read the last little section of p. 14 that we didn't get to today, and highlight the definition of Original Sin.
And make sure you enjoy this weather! We won't have much more of it!

Great discussion today, I was so happy that everyone was engaged and had interesting perspectives to offer. So that we can hit the ground running tomorrow, consider the following questions, and write a few thoughts down about each so that we can discuss tomorrow. This shouldn't take more than a few minutes, so make sure you enjoy this warn weather!
1) What makes you happy?
2) What would it take for you to look back in 50 or 60 years and say that your life has been happy?
Thanks, and see you tomorrow!
